Tongue scraping is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves using a specialized tool to remove debris, bacteria, and dead cells from the surface of the tongue.
Benefits:
Improved oral health: Reduces the buildup of plaque and bacteria, which can lead to bad breath, gum disease, and cavities.
Enhanced taste: Removes the coating on the tongue that can dull taste buds.
Reduced risk of oral infections: Eliminates bacteria and fungi that can cause infections such as thrush.
Improved digestion: Scraping the tongue can remove toxins that interfere with digestion.
How to Do It:
1) Choose a scraper: Stainless steel or copper scrapers are best options. Don't use plastic!
2) Stick out your tongue: Extend your tongue as far as comfortably possible.
3) Place the scraper: Gently place the scraper on the back of your tongue.
4) Scrape: Slowly and gently scrape the tongue from back to front, applying firm but not excessive pressure.
Rinse: Rinse the scraper and your mouth with water.
Repeat: Repeat the process several times until the tongue is clean.
Precautions:
Avoid scraping too hard, as it can damage the tongue or cause gagging.
Use a gentle touch, especially if you have a sensitive tongue.
If you experience any pain, discomfort, or bleeding, discontinue use immediately.
Some studies have shown that tongue scraping can reduce oral bacteria and improve breath freshness.
